Suluh Mahligai · Our Company
Law practised with
patience and care.
We are a small family law firm in Bangsar Baru. We do not take on more work than we can attend to properly. What we offer is time, attention, and the kind of considered advice that families in difficulty genuinely need.
← Back to HomeOur Story
Suluh Mahligai was established in Bangsar Baru with one straightforward aim: to bring the kind of careful, unhurried legal counsel that family matters deserve. The name — suluh, meaning torch or light, and mahligai, meaning a noble dwelling — reflects the belief that the home is worth illuminating with good guidance, even in difficult seasons.
Our founding lawyers had practised in larger firms and found that family law clients, more than any others, needed something that busy commercial environments rarely offered: time. Time to explain. Time to listen. Time to think through the consequences of a decision before it was made.
The firm opened its doors in Jalan Telawi, choosing a neighbourhood known for its mix of the traditional and the contemporary — an environment that suits the kind of work we do. Most of our clients reach us through quiet word of mouth, which is the way we prefer it.
We operate under Malaysian civil family law and engage with cases involving maintenance, custody, correspondence between estranged parties, and comprehensive mediation-led settlements. We do not rush. We do not pursue volume. What we pursue is clarity — and, where it is attainable, resolution.
Our Mission
To provide Malaysian families with legal counsel that is thoughtful, transparent, and grounded in genuine regard for the people involved — not simply their legal positions.
We listen before we advise.
We explain plainly, without unnecessary legal jargon.
We keep our caseload small so that each matter receives proper attention.
We are honest about what law can and cannot achieve.
"The families who sit across from us are rarely in an easy place. The least we can do is give them our full attention."

Siew Wan Lim
Legal Executive

How We Work
Standards we hold ourselves to across every matter we take on.
Legal Professional Privilege
All communications between clients and our lawyers are protected by legal professional privilege under Malaysian law. We treat this not merely as a legal duty but as the foundation of a trusting relationship.
Clear Written Communication
Every significant development in a client's matter is communicated in writing. We write in plain English, free of unnecessary legalese, so that clients can read and understand their own case without translation.
Bar Council Membership
Our lawyers are members of the Malaysian Bar and bound by its professional conduct rules. Clients have access to the Bar Council's complaints mechanism, though we work hard to ensure this is never needed.
Child-Centred Approach
In all matters involving children, we keep the welfare of those children as the central concern — not the positions of either parent. This shapes the advice we give and the documentation we prepare.
Personal Data Protection
Client data is handled in accordance with Malaysia's Personal Data Protection Act 2010. Files are stored securely, access is limited to those working directly on the matter, and data is retained only as long as necessary.
Transparent Fee Agreements
Before any engagement begins, clients receive a written fee agreement setting out the scope of work and the applicable charges. Fees for additional work are discussed and agreed before that work commences.
Family Law Counsel in Bangsar Baru, Kuala Lumpur
Family law in Malaysia encompasses a range of civil proceedings — maintenance orders under the Married Women and Children (Maintenance) Act 1950, custody determinations under the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act 1976, and property division matters that often require both legal and mediated resolution. Navigating these areas calls for legal counsel familiar with both the procedural requirements of the civil courts and the quieter, more human dimensions of family relationships.
Suluh Mahligai occupies a position in this space that is defined by its scale. A small team means that no client file sits with a junior associate who has never met the client. Every matter is known to the senior lawyers on the team. Every letter goes out only after it has been reviewed and considered. This is a deliberate choice, and one that distinguishes our practice from larger family law departments where volume is a commercial necessity.
Located in Jalan Telawi, Bangsar Baru, our office is accessible by public transport and within easy reach of the Bangsar LRT station. We see clients by appointment, which allows us to allocate proper time to each meeting rather than working to a rushed schedule.
For families in Kuala Lumpur seeking legal support that is respectful of the difficulty of their circumstances — whether the matter is a letter to an estranged relative, a custody application, or a comprehensive family settlement — Suluh Mahligai is a considered, measured choice.
