I came to the firm not knowing what I wanted — only that something needed to change with the arrangements for my children. The listening session gave me the space to work that out before anyone started talking about legal options. That mattered to me. The custody application that followed was handled quietly and professionally, with written updates that meant I was never left guessing.

The Family Affairs Plan was the right choice for us. My former wife and I were not hostile, but we needed help translating what we had agreed informally into something that would actually hold. The mediation sessions were calm and purposeful. The settlement document that came out of the process is clear enough that we can both read it without a lawyer explaining it — which was the point.

I used the letter service for a situation involving an estranged sibling and a shared family property. The letter they drafted was exactly the right tone — firm about the legal position but not aggressive. My sibling responded within two weeks, and we reached an agreement without going anywhere near a court. I would not have known how to write something like that myself.

What I appreciated most was that the firm was honest about what to expect. They did not tell me the application would take a certain amount of time and then let that slip with no explanation. When there were delays on the court side, I was informed promptly in writing. That kind of transparency is not common, in my experience, and it made a difficult situation easier to manage.

I was nervous about speaking to a lawyer — I had never done it before and I was not sure if my situation was even serious enough to warrant it. The first session put that concern aside quickly. I was not rushed, I was not made to feel that my situation was small or straightforward, and I came away with a clearer sense of my options than I had had in months. The letter they wrote resolved things within three weeks.

The mediation process under the Family Affairs Plan took a bit longer than I initially expected, but I understand now that was because the mediator was being thorough — and the settlement document that resulted is genuinely comprehensive. One year on, we have had no disputes about the terms. That, I think, is the measure of how well it was done.

Case Studies

Three brief accounts of how our services were applied. Names and identifying details have been changed.

A letter that opened a conversation

Challenge

A client in her mid-forties had been unable to reach her adult daughter following a period of estrangement. Several informal attempts at contact had been ignored or met with hostility. She wanted to re-establish a relationship but did not know how to begin.

Approach

We engaged the Listening and Letter service. Following the listening session, the lawyer drafted a letter that acknowledged the history of the estrangement without assigning blame, stated the client's wish to re-engage, and proposed a specific, low-stakes first step.

Outcome

The daughter replied within ten days. A meeting was arranged. The client updated us two months later to say that the relationship, while still fragile, had resumed. No further legal engagement was needed. The total cost was RM 340.

"I had written so many drafts myself and none of them were right. The firm wrote something I could not have written, and it worked."

Custody and maintenance resolved as one application

Challenge

A father of two children aged six and nine was seeking formal custody and maintenance arrangements following a separation. The children were with him during the week and with their mother at weekends, but there was no legal order in place and the informality of the arrangement was causing uncertainty.

Approach

We prepared a combined maintenance and custody application that reflected the existing arrangement and sought to formalise it. The application presented the children's routine, school situation, and welfare in a coherent, child-centred account.

Outcome

The court made an order broadly consistent with the existing arrangement, with a maintenance figure that both parties accepted as fair. The process took approximately five months from filing to order. Written updates were provided after each hearing date.

"The firm treated this as the children's matter, not mine. That was the right way to approach it."

A comprehensive settlement that both parties could live with

Challenge

A couple separating after eleven years of marriage had one child and shared property in Kuala Lumpur. Both were employed and on reasonable terms, but they lacked the legal knowledge to turn their verbal agreements into a document that would hold.

Approach

We engaged the Family Affairs Plan. Three mediation sessions addressed parenting time, schooling decisions, the shared property, and a maintenance arrangement. Our lawyer was present at each session to clarify the legal implications of proposed terms.

Outcome

A settlement document was produced covering all agreed areas, written in plain English with a summary section for easy reference. Both parties signed within two weeks of receiving the final draft. An annual review has been scheduled for twelve months from the date of signing.

"We wanted to separate without damage. The settlement plan gave us a way to do that."
